POSTAL HISTORY

SS EROS - 1940 (7th June) SALVED FROM THE SEA - cover from the SS Eros which sailed from Montreal on 30th May 1940. 184-1940 Centennial of the Postage stamp illustrated envelope and printed letterhead from original message inside dated 29th May 1940. These Centennial covers of which 100 were sent mainly under cover Poste Restante, but this example was sent as the outer cover to Reading England which arrived around 11.11.1940. The Eros was torpedoed by a German submarine U48 off the North West Coast of Ireland. The Eros was beached and the mail that was in the hold was washed ashore and salvaged with single line SALVED FROM THE SES in violet on both the front and back of the envelope, plus additional part G. Found Open and officially sealed small part brown label on reverse . Stamp washed off and part Montreal May four line machine cancel. Scarce.

SS GRONINGEN - 1945 (7/8th Jan) water affected very damaged cover from the SS Groningen IV ship wreck. Bears printed label STATE COMPANY OF THE PTT, Piece from the S.S. Groningen V, which sank on the IJsselmeer at the end of 1944 and has now been refloated. The steamer Groningen IV foundered as a result of a collision with the passenger steamer Jan Nieveen on Jan 8th on the Ysselmeer.

SS JOHN BIDWELL 1945-1960 salvaged mail cachet on reverse of 1945 Censored WWII Envelope sent from, London to Chile in 1945. The mail was left undiscovered until scrapping of the ship started in 1960 when 500 bags of mail were found, each letter has this cachet (CORRESPONDENICA RATARDADA / Y RECUPERDADA S / S JOHN BIDWELL / 1945-1960 / CORREOS DE CHILE on reverse which was then forwarded to Chile. Mail bags contained mainly newspapers.

SS NORWEGIAN - ACCIDENT EN MER. manuscript on reverse of 1917 (Feb) cover from Curacao Danish West Indies (stamp floated off) to Holland and two sealing labels on reverse POSTES ET TELEGRAPHES. The S.S. Norwegian beached off the Irish coast on March 13th following an explosion probably caused by a mine, which killed five people.

SS RUSSIE - NAUFRAGE DE LA RUSSIE - 1901 (Jan) stampless (stamp floated off) cover to Besancon France with single line NAUFRAGE DE LA RUSSIE in rose-pink across the cover. The Russie sailed from Oran to Marseille on January 7th but stranded at Faraman near Marseille, the passengers and crew were taken off 4 days later. The ship was refloated reaching Marseille on 24th January.

SS VIDAR: 1940 (Dec) Cover New York to Denmark with stamp floated off water damaged with Beskadiget of Sovand single line handstamp in violet, from SS Vida which was torpedoed in the North Sea on Jan 31st, three mailbags being washed up in Denmark hence housed inside a Danish Post Office service cover complete with a fancy Happy New Year card from the original enclosure.

SS VILLE D ALGER - NAUFRAGE DE LA VILLED'ALGER - 1909 (Feb) Printed cover to Marseilles France with two line NAUFRAGE DE LA / VILLED' ALGER in black across the front. The Ville D'Alger was lost after having been in a collision with Orleanais at Marseilles on 27th Feb 1909. She was raised and repaired on 6th April.
