SS EIDER - 1892 (Jan) Cover from Chicago to Vienna (Austria) with stamp floated off and very fine Gehoben aus dem / geschieterten Schiff / Eider (Lifted from the wrecked ship Eider) boxed handstamp in violet on the front, along with FRANCO h/s in black alongside, K.K Briefspediation label on reverse affixed in Vienna Nr.III. The German steamer sailed from New York to Southampton but stranded off the IOW on 31st January 1892. The passengers and mail were landed the following evening. A further 15 bags of mail on the 2nd March. A final sack was found when she was refloated on 29th March.
